August 14th, 1954
Ayr United 5 - 2 Dundee United
League Cup (Sectional Tie)
Signed from Dumbarton on a free transfer, Danny was a regular in the side in the first half of 1954-55. He then fell out of contention and was released at the end of the season to join Montrose.
Ayr United were also visitors to Tannadice to open the new season in the League Cup, but it was a far from happy start to the new campaign for Tannadice fans. Faced with three away fixtures following that opening game with Ayr, a victory was essential but it was Ayr who got off to the flying start and although, drawing at half-time, a goal by debutant Tom McLeod. who had previously played for Liverpool and Chesterfield. However, Ayr dominated the second-halfand went on to score five with George Grant scoring United's second.
A quite remarkable encounter as United slumped to another defeat in a troubled season. Yet it is doubtful if any United supporter envisaged defeat when the half-time whistle blew with United three goals ahead. Unfortunately, our county neighbours staged a staggering second half come-back and overhauled the three-goal lead to dump United into bottom position in the B Division.
