A native of Dundee, William started his football career at the age of 18 with East End, and one year later joined Dundee for a season before going over the border to play for Sheffield United. He became a full-time player in England, but returned to the city to join Dundee Wanderers. When he retired seven years later the Wanderers gave him a benefit game. After a short interval, he joined Montrose for a season and then signed for Brechin. He played there for three years before he arrived at Tannadice.
He missed very few games for Dundee Hibs during the 1910-11 season before being released at the end of the season, after which time he played for Forfar.
