Former Dundee coach Jim McLean, who takes over on Monday as team manager of Dundee United, was with his new club for this match at Tynecastle. However, it was Jerry Kerr's final team selection before stepping up to General Manager after just over 12 years in the hot seat at Tannadice. United were unchanged from their previous game.
It was a calamitous start to the match for United and even more so for their 18 year old defender, Harry Mollinson who was making just his 2nd appearance for the senior side. Trying to hook a Brown cross past the post, he inadvertently struck the post and the ball bounced back into the net. Hearts dominated large spells in this one and McAlpine had to look sharp to grab the ball from the feet of Ford as he ran in on goal. Renton raised a smile from the crowd when he ran into the centre flag and broke it in two! As the game approached half time United struck back. Former Jambo, Alan Gordon, fired home from 6 yards after a neat flick from Stevenson.
Hearts regained the lead early in the second half when Derek Renton headed a fantastic first league goal for the club. The Tynecastle club then looked to put the game beyond United when they scored a third in 79 minutes. This time Donald Ford was on hand to slot home. With just a minute left Tommy Traynor pulled one back for United but it was too little to late. The match provided much to ponder for manager in waiting, Jim McLean.
